Worked example: $70,000 salary
Income tax on $70,000 is $13,220.50 and the ACC levy is $1,225, leaving $55,554.50 a year. Add KiwiSaver at the default 3.5% ($2,450) and take-home pay is $53,104.50 a year — $2,042.48 a fortnight, $1,021.24 a week. That's the figure to compare against rent and bills, not the $70,000 headline.
Comparing two job offers?
Run each salary through the calculator and compare the weekly take-home figures — a $5,000 pay rise is worth about $62 a week after tax and KiwiSaver at this level, not the $96 a week the gross numbers suggest. Use the “copy link” button to save each result.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert my salary to weekly pay?
Divide your annual take-home pay by 52 for weekly, 26 for fortnightly and 12 for monthly. This calculator does it after tax, which is the number that matters for a budget.
Is a $70,000 salary good in NZ?
It's around the middle of full-time earnings. After tax and ACC, $70,000 leaves $55,554.50 a year before KiwiSaver — about $1,068 a week. With KiwiSaver at 3.5% it's $53,104.50.
Does this include KiwiSaver?
Yes — pick your contribution rate (3.5% is the default since April 2026) and the estimate includes it. Your employer's separate 3.5% contribution is not deducted from your pay.
What about the IETC?
If you earn between $24,000 and $70,000 and meet the conditions, the independent earner tax credit is worth up to $520 a year. Tick the IETC box if your tax code is ME or ME SL.
When do these rates change?
NZ tax years run from 1 April to 31 March. These calculators use the 2026–27 rates and are re-checked against IRD every year.
Rates checked against official sources on 1 November 2026: IRD tax rates for individuals and IRD ACC earner's levy rates. See how we calculate for the full method and update log.
